What is the IB Diploma Programme (DP)?

The Diploma Programme (DP) is designed for students aged 16 to 19. It provides a comprehensive and balanced education that develops students intellectually, emotionally, ethically, and socially. The DP emphasizes academic challenge while also nurturing skills essential for lifelong learning, including critical thinking, research, and intercultural understanding.

The DP is recognized by leading universities around the world and is considered one of the best preparations for higher education. It builds upon the knowledge, skills, and attitudes developed in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and serves as a pathway to both university study and future careers.

The IB Diploma Programme:

  • Provides a balanced curriculum with six subject groups ensuring breadth and depth of knowledge.
  • Encourages research and inquiry through the Extended Essay (EE).
  • Develops critical reflection and personal growth through Theory of Knowledge (TOK).
  • Fosters creativity, activity, and service (CAS) as a core component to support holistic development.
  • Promotes international-mindedness by encouraging students to explore diverse perspectives and cultures.
  • Equips students for university and beyond, helping them become responsible global citizens.

The Curriculum

The DP curriculum is made up of six subject groups and three core elements that broaden students’ educational experience and challenge them to apply their knowledge and skills:

  • Studies in language and literature
  • Language acquisition
  • Individuals and societies
  • Sciences

  • The arts

Alongside these, all DP students complete three core requirements:

  1. Theory of Knowledge (TOK): Encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know.
  2. Extended Essay (EE): An independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper.
  3. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS): Students engage in a range of activities alongside their academic studies, encouraging them to grow as individuals and contribute positively to their communities.

The DP: A Unique Approach to Education

The DP aims to develop well-rounded, open-minded, and reflective learners who are prepared for global challenges. Through its rigorous curriculum, emphasis on research, and focus on community engagement, the DP equips students with the skills and mindset necessary for academic success and responsible global citizenship.
